Reasons behind the Ever Growing Rate of Extra Marital Relationships in India

According to a recent survey report by psychiatrist Dr Himangshu Saxena of Mumbai, extra marital relationship is not anything new in India, but the way it is increasing at an alarming rate, it can be a matter of grave concern in the days to come. This is primarily because Indians are more open about expressing their sexuality now. Even Indian mentality has undergone a sea change with media, society and even relatives becoming more receptive about the concept of having a relationship outside marriage. The reasons are many, but the primary ones can be classified as below.

EXTRA MARITAL IS FINE, AS LONG AS THE RESPONSIBILITIES ARE MET

Many people’s who have a liberal and experimental bent of mind, indulge in extra marital relationship in a guilty free manner, if they are able to meet all the social and family responsibilities. Although this sounds little discomforting, this is one of the major causes that is leading to a spurt in this kind of relation in India. Mrs and Mr. Sen were the most perfect couple, they seemed forever in love and inseparable and hosted the most perfect parties of Kolkata.

Suddenly the husband was seen romancing his office secretary, and being blatant about it. He reasoned that he loved his wife, and still does; but because of the long duration of their married life, he was little bored and needed some excitement to stimulate his feelings. This works out fine for him as this girl accompanies him on his official trips and provides him company when Mrs. Sen was absent. He has not shunned any familial responsibilities, playing all the roles of an exemplary husband, father, boss with same efficiency and élan.

RELATIONSHIP OUTSIDE MARRIAGE IS FINE AND DOES NOT INVOKE ANY GUILT

For many people an affair fulfils all that is lacking in their own marriage which could be anything from sex, camaraderie to mental stimulation. This is another main reason why such relationship is on the rise in India. The mindset is changing, and the exposure to the western culture is much more now with everyone becoming more open thanks to social media like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat  etc.

People do not feel guilty in getting involved in another relation outside marriage, because they feel that they do not give their partners any reason to complain. As Mr. Goyal of Mumbai, happily married for 8 years and having a son of 6 years say” I don’t feel guilty. I leave no stones unturned to look after my wife and family, but my girlfriend is my ideal companion and lover. My wife will not accept her and I do not want to break the marriage for my son. So this suits me fine.” Looks complicated, right? But this is how the scenario is in present day India.

FOR SOME, IT’S JUST FOR SEXUAL GRATIFICATION

Some people are sex addicts, and the fact that Indian society is traditionally conservative, many people grow up with repressed sexual desires. Some people feel that sex is always wilder and more exciting with a stranger.  Men are by nature polygamous, and this only adds to their desire to fulfil their carnal desires. But not only males, even the women folk are indulging in a relationship outside the traditional barriers of marriage for satisfying their sexual desires and enjoying it too!

Extra marital relationship is still not widely accepted in India and as majority of Indians still swear by monogamy, such kind of affairs are looked upon with much disdain, criticism and moral ingenuity. Although the openness of relationships have become much more accepted in society today, still an affair outside marriage and continuing in a relationship that is considered taboo becomes very stressful for the spouses who start their lives with wedding vows to remain faithful to each other forever. So better to take a firm control of the situation before it goes out of hand, and things become very murky, painful, disastrous and too hot to handle!
